Why Is It Important To Measure Soil Moisture?

What are your top concerns when it comes to scheduling irrigation for getting optimal yields? Are you using too little or too much water? When is the best time to irrigate?
All these concerns can be easily addressed by measuring the soil moisture in your fields. You can know the right amount of water your crops need and schedule irrigation accordingly to optimize water usage, improve yields and quality, while reducing water, fertilizer, labor and energy costs.

How Does Irrometer Tensiometer Monitor Soil Moisture?

Powered by Netbeat™ – the first irrigation system with a brain, Irrometer tensiometer is a proven and reliable tool to give accurate information on soil moisture status, regardless of soil type.
The tool acts like an artificial root by exchanging water with the surrounding soil to precisely measure the soil water tension in centibars (cb) or kilopascals(kPa). By knowing the exact amount of energy required by root systems to draw water from the soil and the moisture level at the root zone, you can make schedule irrigation for optimal yields.

What Advantages Does Irrometer Tensiometer Have Over Other Soil Moisture Sensors?

The goal of a precise irrigation program is to supply the crops with the right amount of water. And with Irrometer tensiometer, powered by our digital farming solution Netbeat™, you get real-time, accurate soil moisture measurement, available anytime, anywhere on your mobile device or PC:

  • Highly accurate data and works on all soil types
  • Affordable and easy to use
  • Cost-efficient and reliable irrigation scheduling
  • Unaffected by salinity with no need for site calibration, thereby offering true soil water potential measurement
  • Available in several models for sandy and other soil types, with standard lengths of 30cm, 60cm, 90cm (12”, 24”, 36”) based on crop’s rooting depth.

Other Beneficial Features

Irrometer RSU-V Tensiometer is a voltage output based soil moisture sensor designed in such a way that it can indicate soil moisture status electronically. The voltage output can be easily read by remote terminal units such as NetRTU™.

  • Low-cost voltage output/input transducer
  • RoHS-compliant
  • Voltage output signal read by NetRTU unit, enabling real-time data transmission to the grower
  • Temperature compensated as it is not affected by temperature

Where To Install A Soil Moisture Sensor?

The tensiometer is a probe that is inserted directly into the soil to measure soil water tension – the effort required by the root system to extract water stored in the soil. You can accurately measure the amount of irrigation to be applied by installing the tensiometer at two or more depths.

UPPER TENSIOMETER

  • Placed at the top of the root zone
  • Provides data of the wetted bulb’s development in the soil, and indicates the appropriate time to irrigate

MIDDLE TENSIOMETER

  • Placed at the midpoint of the main fibrous root system
  • Provides data regarding the soil’s wetness in the root zone

LOWER TENSIOMETER

  • Placed at the bottom of the root zone
  • Used to determine if too much or too little water is being applied in each irrigation and the proper time intervals between irrigation to provide data regarding runoff or deep percolation
